I need to let this out, because I am Soooo Annoyed! I'm annoyed at Ryan Agoncillo for saying the word about 5times in his interview this afternoon; at Mariel&Toni for repeating the same word about a couple of times; at Luis Manzano for using the word in the AVP; and for the teaser of Fear Factor that has been running for about 2 weeks now. It's sooo wrong.
Ang Tagalog ng PARTICIPANTS ay MGA KALAHOK (pwede na nga din Mga Kasali) hindi participantes. It's not Rocket Science! Hindi siya MATALINHAGA o MALALIM o MAHIRAP na salita na walang wastong katumbas sa tagalog. Ang simple, simple bakit kailangang babuyin ang salita? Bakit?! Matatanggap ko sana kung di lang nya mahanap o maisip sa pagkakataon na yun kung ano ang tagalog ng participants, pero hindi eh. Sinadya siya at doon ako naiinis.
I'm not a linguist and I admit to speaking in Taglish every now and then. But I try to speak in the same language in one sentence. And I don't create "new" and "crazy" translations of words that actually have existing translations already. If you can't remember how it is said in Tagalog just say it in English, do not simply add an ES to it and pretend that it's actually the right word.
Honestly, there's a part of me that's actually looking forward to catching Pinoy Fear Factor. I've been watching Survivor (ok, ok, mainly for Paolo although he doesn't work very well as the host of survivor. I'm actually enjoying survivor, not as much as the first 2 American Survivors and the All Stars (because those that followed were quite predictable in a way). It's just sad that because it is everyday, they only play short episodes every night. And perhaps I'll end watching as soon as they vote out both VERN and KIKO. I loved that Vern won the last Immunity! I'd rather Paolo hosts something more like the old Extra Challenge format show) and I want to see which one would be a better franchise. But if I will be hearing Ryan say that word everyday or translate some other English word in that manner, I won't last 5 minutes watching that show!

ReplyDeleteI was about to mention the same thing, that they probably used PARTICIPANTES because they were shooting in a South American country or something to that effect.
ReplyDeleteAs for Survivor: Philippines, I tried watching it but I hated the fact they (GMA 7) made it into a daily show. I hated the fact they cut through challenges for commercials. And I don't like my shows peppered with too many advertisements. Mas matagal pa yung patalastas sa palabas. Oh well, that's just me.

ReplyDeleteyup, the show is peppered with spanish words here and there, i think, to add a little argentinian flavor to it. can be annoying at first but i'd personally let it pass if only to teach the viewers a few foreign words. isipin mo na lang nanonood ka ng Dora.
ReplyDeleteI guess it's irritating because a lot of current sTV shows and even news shows are guilty of "inventing" new words because they couldn't find the translation or too lazy to learn it. Take for example the word "SUHESTYON" as the so-called translation for "suggestion"
ReplyDeleteWe're all wondering where the sense of nationalism has gone. LANGUAGE is supposed to be the soul of the nation. Rizal said it himself: Ang hindi marunong magmahal sa sariling wika ay higit pa sa amoy ng mabahong isda.
And while I understand that FEAR FACTOR should not be shot in the country where it will be shown, you never see the original franchise saying: FEAR FACTOR timbuktu, nor do they refer to the contestants by the language of where the show was being shot. Why to do we have to call it FEAR FACTOR South America or the participants participantes? I dunno...maybe to make it sound like it's better than a "regular Filipino output"? Maybe because they think that the only way the Filipinos would find it worth watching is if it's "better than if made in the Philippines"
There's where nationalism has gone: when the main language spoken is some bastardized combination of English and Tagalog, or when writers don't even find the effort to use the correct Filipino word...a stark reflection of how majority of Filipinos are still searching for that American, Canadian, Australian, Spanish, Italian...anywhere-but-here dream.
More than 100 years after the Spaniards left us, more than 50 years since we've declared independence from the Americans, and more than 20 years since the so-called liberators conquered EDSA...we're still not free.
I'm sorry lang ha! I cannot accept the reasoning of using Spanish words to stress that they shot in Argentina. hello?! "Kailangan pa bang imemorize yan?" Eh paulit ulit na nga sa OBB nila at main teaser under the main title ang Argentina eh. Di naman sila makulit noh?
ReplyDeleteIf they want to teach few Spanish words, a "challenge" show is not the venue to do so, they will not achieve that objective. And Am, I didn't hear them use other words sa teaser aside from "participantes," or maybe because I was so irritated, I refused to listen anymore.

ReplyDeleteCheap shot lang talaga, cheap shot to stress the whole latin/spanish thing in the promos. If you need to convince the Audience that your show is good by using crazy antics and "uber" stressed point that it was shot outside the country and not for the obvious merits that it is a stunt/challenge game show, that is a franchise of a good foreign show, I say you probably made some mistakes in franchising it in the first place.
Minsan lang talaga OA na, at pag OA na - walang kwenta. Tignan mo si LA Lopez - sobrang OA, di ba walang nangyari sa kanya? (may galit kay LA? wala OA lang sya eh kaya nakakairita!)

try watching the news and you'll find lots of these. well, i may be wrong but it annoys me as much.
anyway, just watch the noontime shows of most top rating stations and don't you think that the managements of these stations care enough for their viewers to hear, absorb and learn the correct values their audiences might pick up from their shows????

well said Kuya Dencio, well said. Buti na lang I don't watch Noon Time shows, kakainis nga lang ang News din!! kaya nga minsan mas ok na yung NEWS on Q kasi Straight News lang talaga at in English na straight. Pero ok di naman kasi sana kung tagalog di ba? Kung ayusin nga lang kasi sana eh.
